EU Commissioner Thierry Breton warned Elon Musk in a letter today that X, formerly Twitter, \u201cis being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU\u201d after Hamas attacks in Israel. Breton also reminded Musk that the Digital Services Act (DSA), which went into effect in August, \u201csets very precise obligations regarding content moderation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The commissioner wrote that illegal content flagged by \u201crelevant authorities\u201d was still on the site, signifying that nothing had been done about it. The DSA, he noted, requires X to remove such content quickly and objectively. He added that Musk\u2019s platform needs to have \u201cproportionate and effective mitigation measures\u201d to deal with \u201crisks to public security and civic discourse\u201d that resulted from disinformation.<\/p>\n
Breton added that the media and other organizations \u201cwidely report\u201d misleading imagery and facts from X, listing examples like old pictures from previous armed conflicts and video game footage.<\/p>\n
Musk pushed back on Breton later in the day, writing on X that the commissioner should detail the violations his letter was referring to. \u201cPlease list the violations you allude to on X, so that that the public can see them,\u201d Musk wrote.<\/p>\n
Breton responded that Musk is \u201cwell aware of\u201d reports from users and authorities about \u201cfake content and glorification of violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI still don\u2019t know what they\u2019re talking about!\u201d Musk later replied to another user on X.<\/p>\n
EU regulators chastised Musk in late September over disinformation on the platform, with European Commissioner V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1 saying then that the platform has the \u201clargest ratio of mis\/disinformation\u201d even compared to Facebook. Though Musk\u2019s platform had departed the voluntary EU Code of Practice on Disinformation, the DSA requires X and other \u201cVery Large Online Platforms\u201d to comply with similar guidelines to those laid out in the code.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Breton ended his letter urging Musk to send back a \u201cprompt, accurate, and complete response\u201d to his request in the next 24 hours, adding that the answer will be included in the EU\u2019s DSA compliance file on X.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
